A Visit to Samegai to See Baikamo
Hello, this is Mog. Today I'll continue from where we left off last time. I went to see baikamo (water crowfoot) in Samegai, located in the northeastern part of Shiga Prefecture.

Weather Forecast
Check the weather forecast carefully. If the river swells due to rain, the baikamo flowers may be washed away or become difficult to see. On the day I went, it was sunny, but it had rained a few days before, so the river was slightly swollen. It's better to wait about 7 days after it rains.
雨で川が増水すると、バイカモの花が流されたり、見えにくくなります。私が行った日は晴れていましたが、数日前に雨が降ったので、少し増水していました。雨が降ってから7日間ぐらいは開けたほうが良いそうです。
The outdoor temperature was 36 degrees Celsius, a very hot day, but walking along the river while looking at the baikamo made me forget about the heat. The townscape, which allows you to feel the history, is also a unique attraction not found elsewhere.
外の気温は36度、とても暑い日でしたが、バイカモを見ながら、川沿いを歩くと暑さも忘れられました。歴史を感じられる町並みも他では見られない良さです。
The Townscape
Do you know about the Nakasendo? It was a major road of about 534km connecting Kyoto and Edo during the Edo period (1603-1868).
中山道をご存知でしょうか？江戸時代（1603〜1868年）、京都と江戸を結ぶ約534kmの主要な道のことです。
This road had 69 post towns, and Samegai was the 61st post town. A post town was a place where various people, such as samurai, merchants, and general travelers, could stay or rest.
この道には69の宿場町があり、醒ヶ井は61番目の宿場町です。宿場町とは武士や商人、一般の旅人など、様々な人々が宿泊や休憩などに利用する場所です。
The Coldness of the River
Along the river, there are steps created here and there to allow people to get close to the river. There were also tools placed for observing baikamo. Even though the flowers were hard to see due to the swollen river, I could see them clearly using these tools. They were small and cute 💕
川沿いには所々、川に近づける段差を作ってあります。バイカモを観察する道具も置いてありました。
増水していて見えにくかった花もこの道具を使って、しっかり見ることができました。小さくて可愛い💕
River Temperature
The river temperature remains around 13 degrees Celsius year-round. I dipped my hand in for a moment. "So cold!" The first thing that came to my mind was how delicious it would be to cool watermelon here. And then, I discovered that locals were actually cooling watermelon! 🤭
川の温度は年間通して13度前後。少しだけ手を浸してみました。「冷た〜い」
真っ先に頭に浮かんだのは、ここでスイカを冷やしたら美味しいだろうなぁ、ということでした。
と、思っていたら、地元の方が本当にスイカを冷やしているのを発見！🤭
Samegai-juku Museum
I went to the Samegai-juku Museum to get a guide map. This building was designed by William Merrell Vories, who was born in the United States, in 1915 (Taisho 4) and was used as a post office until 1973 (Showa 48).
ガイドマップをもらいに醒井宿資料館に行きました。ここは大正4年（1915）に米国出身のウィリアム・メレル・ヴォーリズが設計し、昭和48年（1973年）まで郵便局として使用されていました。
I love Western-style architecture from the Meiji and Taisho eras. Inside, not only guide maps but also materials related to the design at that time and the post office were exhibited.
明治、大正の洋風建築は大好きです。中はガイドマップだけでなく、当時の設計や郵便局に関する資料が展示してありました。
Reservations Recommended for Lunch
Feeling hungry, I visited several restaurants using the guide map. However, all the places I went to only accepted customers with reservations for lunch 😱 (It seems you can eat shaved ice and ice cream without a reservation)
A place called Wa Cafe Tachiki seemed to have a nice atmosphere, so I'll make a reservation and go there next time.
お腹が空いたので、ガイドマップを頼りに、お店を何件か回りました。しかし、行ったお店全て、ランチは予約客しか受け付けてないとのこと😱（かき氷やアイスは予約しなくても食べられるようです）
和cafe たち季というお店、雰囲気も良さそうだったので、次回は予約を取って行きます。
In the end, I went back to Samegai Station and ate at a restaurant in front of the station.
Next time, I'll write about the shops I visited in Samegai.

Points to Note When Sightseeing
- Check the weather forecast
- Do not touch the river except at designated points
- Be quiet as locals live here. Do not enter private houses.
- Reservations are recommended for lunch

Access Information
How to get to Samegai
1. Change to the Ohmi Railway at JR Maibara Station
2. Take the Ohmi Railway for about 10 minutes and get off at Samegai Station
3. It's about a 5-minute walk from Samegai Station to the center of Samegai
1. JRの米原駅から近江鉄道に乗り換え
2. 近江鉄道で約10分、醒ヶ井駅で下車
3. 醒ヶ井駅から徒歩で約5分で醒ヶ井の中心部に到着
