This time, I'd like to introduce you to a "Tsumami Zaiku" shop I visited there.
今回はそこで立ち寄った「つまみ細工」のお店についてご紹介しますね。
What is Tsumami Zaiku
Do you know about "Tsumami Zaiku," a Japanese handicraft? It's a very cute and delicate decoration made by folding small pieces of fabric.
みなさん、「つまみ細工」という日本の手仕事をご存知ですか？小さな布を折りたたんで作る、とても可愛らしくて繊細な飾りなんです。
The "tsumami" in Tsumami Zaiku means "to lightly pinch with fingertips."
つまみ細工の「つまみ」とは、「指先で軽く挟んで摘む」という意味です。
Tsumami Zaiku originated more than 200 years ago, towards the end of the Edo period. It is said that it began when fashionable townswomen started using it as hair ornaments.
つまみ細工は今から200年以上も前、江戸時代の終わりごろに生まれました。当時、おしゃれな町人の女性たちが髪飾りとして使い始めたのがきっかけだそうです。
Shortage of Successors
However, recently, the number of artisans making Tsumami Zaiku has decreased significantly. One of the reasons is said to be the decrease in opportunities to wear kimono.
ところが最近、つまみ細工を作る職人さんがとても少なくなってしまったそうです。着物を着る機会が減った事もその一因なのだとか。
How It's Made
Let me explain how it's made. First, prepare small squares of fabric about 1-2cm in size. These are carefully folded using tweezers. The folded fabric is fixed with glue, and many of these are combined to create shapes such as flowers or butterflies.
どうやって作るのかご説明しましょう。まず、1～2cmくらいの小さな正方形の布を用意します。それをピンセットでつまんで、丁寧に折りたたんでいきます。折りたたんだ布を糊で固定して、それをたくさん組み合わせて花や蝶などの形を作るんです。
They were making it in the back of the shop, so I got to see it, but what intricate work! I wonder how much concentration and time it takes to create one piece 🤔
This person started Tsumami Zaiku as a hobby, but they came to love this work so much that they decided to make it their profession.
お店の奥で作っておられたので、見せていただきましたが、なんて細かい作業でしょう！1つの作品作るのにどれだけの集中力と時間がかかるんだろう🤔
この方はつまみ細工を趣味で始めたそうですが、この作業がとても好きになり、仕事にする事にしたそうです。
Items
Tsumami Zaiku often uses fabrics used in kimono, so it goes very well with traditional Japanese attire. There were photos of wedding hair ornaments in the shop.
Not only accessories, but there were also many small items and interior goods. The ideas and sense of style were wonderful 👍
つまみ細工は着物に使われる生地を使う事が多いので、和装との相性がとても良いのです。結婚式の髪飾りの写真がお店にありました。
アクセサリーだけでなく、小物やインテリアの雑貨もたくさん置いてありました。アイデアとセンスが素晴らしい👍
What I Bought
I bought a wind chime.
Inside the glass is a Baikamo flower made with Tsumami Zaiku.
It's so cool and cute 🤗💕
私は風鈴を買いました。
ガラスの中にはつまみ細工で作られたバイカモの花が入っています。
なんとも涼しげで可愛いですね🤗💕
About Wind Chimes
In Japan, wind chimes are hung from eaves or window sills in summer. When the wind blows, they produce a cool sound, bringing a sense of refreshment in the hot summer. Wind chimes are a symbol of summer in Japan.
日本では風鈴は夏に家の軒先や窓辺に吊るされます。風が吹くと涼しげな音を奏で、暑い夏に清涼感をもたらします。風鈴は日本では夏を象徴するアイテムなのです。
