Hello, I'm Mog. Today, I'll report about Yakushiji Temple, an important ancient Japanese temple that I visited during my trip to Nara.
こんにちは、Mogです。今回は奈良旅行で訪れた、古代からある日本の重要なお寺「薬師寺」についてレポートしますね。
Yakushiji Temple
During my middle school field trip, I visited Yakushiji Temple. Although I wasn't interested in temples at that time, I remember being impressed by the interesting talk given by the temple's head priest.
私は中学生の頃、学校の修学旅行で薬師寺に行きました。その頃はお寺などに興味がなかったのですが、薬師寺の管主のお話が面白かったことが印象に残っています。
I heard that Yakushiji Temple places great importance on Buddhist sermons, and now I understand why, so I'll introduce you to this.
薬師寺はお坊さんによる仏教の講話を大切にしているそうで、今回その理由も分かりましたので、紹介しますね。
History of Yakushiji
Yakushiji is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in the late 7th century (more than 1,300 years ago) when the Empress fell ill. Emperor Temmu established it as a temple for healing illnesses, enshrining Yakushi Nyorai (the Buddha of healing) who saves people from diseases. After suffering numerous disasters over 1,300 years, only the East Pagoda remained.
薬師寺はユネスコ世界遺産に登録されている由緒あるお寺です。薬師寺は7世紀末（1300年以上前）、皇后が病気になったときに、天武天皇が人々を病から救う薬師如来（病気を治す仏様）をご本尊として建てた病気平癒の寺として知られています。1300年の間に多くの災害を受け、最終的に東塔のみが残っていました。
Restoration Project
In 1967, Takada, who was the head priest at that time, decided to restore the temple buildings. The restoration cost was an enormous 1 billion yen. Although the Japanese economy was thriving at the time and they could have sought donations from companies, temple's head priest chose not to do so.
1967年、当時の管主の高田さんが寺の建物を元通りに復興することを決意しました。復興にかかる費用は10億円と莫大な費用です。当時は日本経済も好調でしたので、企業から寄付を募ることもできましたが、管主はそうしませんでした。
He believed that even if a splendid temple was rebuilt, it would be meaningless without people who came to pray. So first, he focused on Buddhist sermons to help people learn about Yakushiji.
立派なお寺が再び建てられても、祈る人がいなければ意味がないと考え、まずは薬師寺のことを知ってもらうための講話を大切にしました。
Then, they decided to restore Yakushiji through "Shakyo" (copying Buddhist sutras), an activity where visitors copy Buddhist scriptures. It is believed that those who perform shakyo receive merit (happiness from good deeds).
そして、参拝者にお経（仏教の聖典）を写してもらう「写経」という活動により薬師寺を復興することにしました。写経をした人は功徳（よい行いによる幸せ）を得られると考えられています。
The shakyo fee was 1,000 yen per scroll (now 2,000 yen), and after achieving one million scrolls over seven years, they rebuilt the Main Hall (Kondo).
写経は1巻1000円（現在2000円）の料金で行い、7年かけて100万巻を達成して本堂（金堂）を再建しました。
Subsequently, through shakyo, they restored the West Pagoda, covered corridor, central gate, and Great Lecture Hall. Now they have a dedicated space for shakyo (Shakyo Practice Hall) where sermons are also given.
その後も写経により、西の塔（西塔）、回廊（建物と建物をつなぐ廊下）、中門（正門）、大講堂を復興しました。今では写経を行う専用の場所（写経道場）があり、そこで講話もされているそうです。
I have never done shakyo myself, but I've heard that my father does it for handwriting practice and my uncle does it to calm his mind. I would like to try it sometime.
私自身は写経をしたことがないのですが、父は字の練習のために、叔父は心を落ち着かせるためにしていると聞いたことがあります。私もいつか体験してみたいです。
East Pagoda Restoration
The East Pagoda is a National Treasure (culturally significant property recognized by Japan) that has survived since Yakushiji was first built 1,300 years ago. From 2009, a major restoration was carried out over 12 years, dismantling the pagoda and reassembling 13,000 component parts.
東塔は1300年前、薬師寺が建てられた当初から残っている国宝（日本が特に重要だと認めた文化財）です。2009年から12年かけて塔を解体して1万3000個の部材を組み直す大規模な修復が行われました。
Beauty of the East Pagoda
Based on records showing that the east and west pagodas of Yakushiji had groups of statues called "Shaka Hasso," depicting eight scenes from the life of Shakyamuni (founder of Buddhism), new bronze statues were placed in the pagoda in 2023. We were shown the East and West Pagodas from all four directions. This will mark a new chapter in history.
薬師寺の東と西の塔には、お釈迦様（仏教の開祖）の生涯を八つの場面で表現した「釈迦八相」という像の群れがあったという記録から、2023年に新しくブロンズ像が塔に置かれたそうです。東塔、西塔それぞれ4方向から見せていただきました。これがまた新たな歴史を刻むのですね。
Goshuin
I also received a goshuin (a traditional seal stamp and calligraphy that serves as proof of visiting temples and shrines) at Yakushiji. I was able to watch them write the powerful calligraphy right in front of me. It was so cool!
薬師寺でも御朱印（お寺や神社を参拝した記念として、寺社名や日付を手書きで書いてもらえる伝統的なしるし）をいただきましたよ。目の前で迫力のある文字を書く様子を見せていただきました。カッコいいなぁ。
