Hello, I'm Mog. As part of my series about traveling in Nara, today I'd like to introduce the Shikasaruko Building near Kintetsu Nara Station. I was really looking forward to visiting because I knew it housed the main store of Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, one of my favorite shops.
こんにちは、Mogです。奈良旅行について連載している中で、今日は近鉄奈良駅近くにある鹿猿狐ビルヂングをご紹介します。この中に私の大好きなお店、中川政七商店の本店があることを知り、とても楽しみにしていました。
Shikasarukitsune Building
Since the location was a bit difficult to find, I relied on Google Maps navigation. The Shikasaruko Building houses several shops with good taste, in addition to Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten.
場所がちょっと分かりにくかったため、Googleマップのナビを頼りに向かいました。鹿猿狐ビルヂングには中川政七商店の他にも、センスの良いお店がいくつか入っています。
Though you wouldn't guess from the exterior, the interior is a renovated machiya (traditional merchant's house) and kura (storehouse for safely storing household goods and merchandise). As someone who loves traditional Japanese architecture, I couldn't resist! 😊
外観からは想像できませんが、中は町屋（伝統的な商人の家）や蔵（家財・商品などを安全に貯蔵するための建物）を改装したもの。日本の伝統的な建築が大好きな私にはたまりません🤗
In the apparel shop, there was a display of hina dolls made using the traditional kimekomi technique.
アパレルショップには、木目込みという伝統的な技法を使った雛人形が展示されていました。

Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten
Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten is a long-established business that started making hemp fabric over 300 years ago. Currently, they sell wonderful traditional crafts from all over Japan as modern lifestyle goods while preserving traditional techniques.
中川政七商店は、300年以上前に麻の布づくりからスタートした老舗です。現在は、全国の素晴らしい伝統工芸品を、昔ながらの技を活かしながら今の暮らしに合う雑貨として販売しています。
In the exhibition room, I learned about how Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten has approached traditional crafts and design.
展示室では、中川政七商店が伝統工芸やデザインとどのように向き合ってきたのかを学ぶことができました。

Hemp Making in the Storehouse
In the storehouse, craftsmen were working. They were splitting hemp into thin strips and connecting them to make a single thread.
蔵では職人さんが手仕事をされていました。麻を細く割いて繋ぎ、一本の糸に仕上げているのです。
They use traditional tools in this storehouse to make their products. I was very excited to see tools that I had only seen in old tales before.
この蔵にある昔ながらの道具を使って、お店の製品を作られているそうです。昔ばなしの中でしか見たことがないような道具ばかりで、私は興奮気味に見学させていただきました。
They occasionally hold workshops where you can weave fabric using a loom.
機織り機を使って布を織るワークショップも時々開催されているとのこと。

Kaya-ori Dishcloth
"Kaya-ori" is a Nara craft, a thin, loose-weave fabric. Eight layers of cotton kaya-weave are luxuriously sewn together, making it highly absorbent and durable. It can be used long-term as a dish cloth, counter wipe, or hand towel. There were various patterns, making it hard to choose.
「かや織」は奈良の工芸で、目の粗い薄織物です。綿のかや織を贅沢に八枚重ねで縫い合わせているため、吸水性が非常に高く丈夫です。器や台ふき、おてふきなどとして長く使うことができます。様々な柄があり、選ぶのに悩みました。
Goshuin-cho
Goshuin is a proof of visit stamp from shrines and temples. A goshuin-cho is a special book for collecting these stamps.
御朱印とは、神社やお寶の参拝証明書です。証明書を書いてもらうための専用の冊子が御朱印帳です。
I bought a goshuin-cho with a cute deer pattern matching with my friend. I will remember this Nara trip every time I use it 👍
鹿の柄が可愛らしい御朱印帳を友人とお揃いで購入しました。これを使うたびに、この奈良旅行を思い出すことでしょう👍

Tea at Saron
As it started raining, we cancelled our plans to move on and decided to have tea at a Japanese café with a view of the courtyard. Japanese gardens are especially beautiful on rainy days. The sound of rain in the tatami room is very calming.
雨が降ってきたため、移動は中止し、中庭が見える和カフェでお茶をいただくことにしました。雨の日の日本庭園は特に美しいものです。和室で聞く雨音に心が落ち着きます。
They say you can experience a tea ceremony if you make a reservation.
予約すれば茶道体験もできるそうですよ。
