In July 2024, new banknotes were issued in Japan, and I was able to get my hands on them recently 👍
It seems that not many people have seen the new bills yet, and when I used them to pay at stores, they were very pleased.
2024年7月、日本で新しい紙幣が発行され、先日、手に入れることができました👍
まだ新札を目にした方は少ないようで、お店で支払いの際に使うと、とても喜ばれました。
Cashless Situation in Japan
Surprising Cash Preference
Now, some of you who have visited Japan may have been surprised to find that cash payments are still the mainstream.
さて、日本を訪れたことのある皆さんの中には、現金での支払いがまだまだ主流であることに驚かれた方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。
According to a 2021 survey by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan's cashless payment ratio was about 30%, significantly lower than the major countries' average of 52%.
I had imagined that Japan's ratio would be low, but I was a bit surprised to learn that Germany also has a low cashless ratio. I'd like to know more about the situation in Germany 🤔
経済産業省の2021年の調査によると、日本のキャッシュレス決済比率は約30%で、主要国平均の52%を大きく下回っていました。
日本の比率が低い事は想像していましたが、ドイツもキャッシュレスの比率が低い事に、少し驚きました。ドイツの事情も知りたいなぁ🤔
Government Initiatives and Goals
In response to this situation, the Japanese government set a goal to raise the cashless payment ratio to 40% by 2025, and eventually to 80%, which would be the highest level in the world. As a result of various initiatives, the announcement in March 2024 showed that the cashless payment ratio had risen to 39.3% (126.7 trillion yen), making it certain that the goal for 2025 would be achieved.
このような状況を受けて、日本政府は2025年までにキャッシュレス決済比率を40%に、そして将来的には世界最高水準の80%にまで引き上げる目標を掲げました。さまざまな取り組みの結果、2024年3月の発表では、キャッシュレス決済比率が39.3%（126.7兆円）まで上昇し、2025年までの目標達成が確実な状況となりました。
My Cashless Experience
Actually, I only started using cashless payments recently. There were mainly two reasons why I was hesitant:
実は、私自身もキャッシュレス決済を始めたのはつい最近のことです。ためらっていた理由は主に二つあります。
1. Concerns about overspending and difficulty in managing money
2. Confusion about which payment method to use, as different stores accept different methods
1. お金の使い過ぎや管理の難しさへの不安
2. 店舗によって対応している決済方法が異なり、どれを使えばいいか迷っていたこと
After actually using it, I find it convenient, but at the same time, I feel it's difficult to realize how much money I'm spending and to manage it.
実際に使ってみると、確かに便利だと感じる反面、お金の減りを実感しにくく、管理の難しさも感じています。
The Spreading Wave of Cashless Payments
Recently, I've noticed that supermarkets and stores I frequently visit have introduced cashless self-checkout registers, and it seems more people around me are using cashless payments.
最近では、よく利用するスーパーやお店でもキャッシュレス対応のセルフレジが導入され、周りでもキャッシュレス決済を利用する人が増えたように感じます。
Convenient Features of Electronic Payments
I also learned about some unexpectedly convenient features of electronic payments. For example, at a recent drinking party, we were able to easily split the bill using smartphones.
Also, this New Year's, I sent otoshidama (New Year's money gift for children) to my nephew, whom I couldn't meet, via electronic payment.
電子決済では、思わぬ便利な機能がある事も知りました。例えば、先日の飲み会では、スマートフォンを使って簡単に割り勘ができました。
また、今年のお正月は、会えなかった甥にお年玉（お正月に子どもにあげるお小遣いの事）を電子決済で送りました。
I thought it would be impersonal before using it, but there were some nice touches.
使うまでは味気ないと思っていましたが、素敵な工夫がされていました。
When the receiver taps the image of the otoshidama envelope on their smartphone, they can read a message from the sender and even send a reply.
受け取る側がスマートフォンでお年玉袋の画像をタップすると、送り主からのメッセージを読んだり、返事を送ったりできるのです。

Cash is Still Necessary
It seems that many elderly people are cautious about switching to cashless payments. Also, especially in rural areas, there are still stores that only accept cash. Therefore, I always make sure to carry my wallet when I go out.
高齢者の方々はキャッシュレス決済への移行に慎重な方は多いようです。また、地方では特に現金のみしか使えないお店もあります。そのため、外出時には必ず財布も持ち歩くようにしています。
Amazing Technology in New Paper Money
Now that I have the new banknotes, I went to the Bank of Japan's web site and checked each of the changes one by one to see what was changed.
The banknotes use the latest technology to prevent counterfeiting.
さて、新紙幣を手に入れた私は日本銀行のwebを見ながら、どこが変更されたのか一つ一つ確認しましたよ。
紙幣は偽造防止のために、最新の技術を使ってあるのです。
I was especially impressed by the 3D holograms, which show different patterns when viewed from different angles. I was also happy when I used a magnifying glass to find small letters that were difficult to see with the naked eye.
特に角度を変えると異なる柄が出てくる3Dホログラムには感動しました。また、肉眼ではわかりにくい小さな文字を虫眼鏡を使って見つけた時も嬉しかったなぁ。
