Today, I’d like to share the types of Japanese tea that are essential in my daily life, and how I enjoy them.

私の生活に欠かせない日本茶の種類や楽しみ方について、今日はお話しますね。
Types of Japanese Tea
I’ll introduce three representative types of Japanese tea.
I choose them depending on the situation and my mood.
代表的な日本茶の種類を3つ紹介しますね。
私はこれらをシーンや気分に合わせて使い分けしています。
Sencha
Sencha is the most commonly consumed green tea in Japan.
It has a slightly bitter taste, so some people may love it while others may not, especially if it’s their first time.
I like to drink sencha with sweet Japanese sweets.
It contains caffeine (less than coffee), so I drink it when I want to feel refreshed.
It is also said to have antibacterial properties, and some people even use it for gargling to help prevent colds.
煎茶は、日本で最もよく飲まれている代表的な緑茶です。
苦味もあるので、初めて飲む人は好き嫌いが分かれるかもしれません。
私は甘い和菓子を食べる時に、煎茶を合わせるのが好きです。
コーヒーより少ないですがカフェインも含まれているので、シャキッとしたい時にも飲みます。
また、殺菌作用があると言われており、風邪予防のためにうがいに使う人もいるそうです。
Hojicha
Hojicha is made by roasting sencha over high heat.
It has a toasty aroma and a clean, mild taste, and it contains very little caffeine.
I often drink hojicha when I want to relax and take a break.
ほうじ茶は、煎茶を強火で焙煎したお茶です。
香ばしい香りとすっきりした味が特徴で、カフェインが少ないです。
ほっとひと息つきたい時に、私はよくほうじ茶を飲みます。
Genmaicha
Genmaicha is a Japanese tea made by adding roasted rice to sencha or bancha.
I think genmaicha pairs very well with meals, especially rice dishes.
Many people drink it after meals.
玄米茶は、煎茶や番茶に炒った米を加えた日本茶です。
玄米茶はご飯にとても合うと思います。
食後に飲むことも多いです。
How to Brew Japanese Tea
Using a Kyusu (Japanese Teapot)
In Japan, it’s common to use a special teapot called a “kyusu” to brew tea.

日本では、「急須（きゅうす）」という専用の茶器を使ってお茶を淹れるのが一般的です。

No Kyusu? No Problem
You can also find tea bags at supermarkets in Japan.
They are very convenient when making tea for one person, so many people use them at the office.
急須がなくても大丈夫です。
ティーバッグに入ったお茶もスーパーで売っています。
1人分を手軽に淹れられるので、オフィスなどで使う人も多いです。
