While the end of the year is busy, New Year's is spent leisurely. I often use the long New Year's holiday to return to my family home. Today, I'll explain how New Year's is spent in Japan, using my family home as an example.
年末は慌ただしいですが、お正月はゆっくり過ごします。私は年末年始の長期休みを利用して実家に帰省することも多いです。今日は日本のお正月の過ごし方について、私の実家を例にしてご説明しますね。
First Sunrise
The first sunrise of the year is called "Hatsuhinode." It has long been considered an auspicious sight that brings good fortune for the new year.
その年初めて昇る太陽を「初日の出」と言います。新年の幸運を願う縁起物として、古くから大切にされています。
My sister and her husband make it a tradition to see the first sunrise every year. After hearing the New Year's Eve bell and exchanging "Happy New Year!" with family, they take a short nap, wake up around 5:30, bundle up warmly, and head out. I thought about joining them once, but I was too sleepy to manage it 😅
妹夫婦は毎年初日の出を見ることを恒例としています。除夜の鐘を聞き、「明けましておめでとう！」と家族で言い合った後、仮眠を取り、5時半頃に起きて防寒対策をしてから家を出ます。私も一度一緒に行こうと思ったのですが、眠くて無理でした😅
They say it's moving to climb a small hill and watch as the sun gradually rises from darkness, slowly brightening the sky.
小高い山に登り、暗闇から少しずつ陽が昇り、明るくなっていく様子は感動的なのだそうです。
New Year's Food
Otoso
Otoso is sake drunk on New Year's to pray for long life and good health. While some regions use sake infused with medicinal herbs, my family uses Japanese sake with gold flakes. My father, being the eldest, pours it, and we drink in order from youngest to oldest. After otoso, we have ozoni.
おとそは無病長寿を願ってお正月に飲むお酒のことです。地域によって生薬を漬け込んだお酒を飲むそうですが、私の実家では金粉入りの日本酒を使います。
年長者である父がつぎ、年齢が若い順に飲みます。おとそが終わると、お雑煮をいただきます。
Ozoni
Ozoni is a soup with rice cakes that's essential for New Year's. The ingredients, shape of mochi, and seasoning vary by region, such as between Kanto and Kansai.
お雑煮はお餅の入った汁物で、お正月に欠かせない食べ物です。
お雑煮に入れる具材や餅の形、味付けには、関東や関西など地域によってさまざまな違いがあります。
In my hometown of Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, our ozoni is made with clear soup using dried sardines (iriko) for stock, with daikon radish, carrots, chrysanthemum greens, and chicken. We use round mochi that softens in the soup without being grilled.
私の実家、愛媛県今治市のお雑煮は、いりこ（小魚）で出汁を取ったすまし汁に、大根、人参、春菊、鶏肉を入れます。餅は丸餅で、焼かずに汁で柔らかくします。
Osechi Cuisine
Osechi cuisine, prepared at the end of the year, is the main New Year's dish. Each dish carries meaning, such as increased wealth, prosperity of descendants, and longevity. In the past, when stores were closed during New Year's, it was made to last about three days. The strong flavoring and abundance of sweet dishes are characteristic features.
年末に準備しておいたおせち料理は、お正月のメイン料理です。
それぞれの料理には、金運アップ、子孫繁栄、長寿などの意味が込められています。
昔はお正月にお店も開いていなかったので、3日ほど日持ちするよう作ります。味付けが濃く、甘い物が多いのも特徴の一つです。
Recently, since some supermarkets open from January 2nd and people get tired of eating the same food, my family only eats our osechi dishes on New Year's Day.
最近は2日から開いているスーパーもあることと、同じ物を食べるのに飽きてしまうことから、私の実家では元旦だけおせち料理を食べます。
Otoshidama
For children, the biggest New Year's joy is undoubtedly otoshidama. Otoshidama is money given from adults to children, or from senior to junior people, as a New Year's gift.
子どもたちのお正月の楽しみは、なんといってもお年玉でしょう。
お年玉とは、大人から子どもへ、または目上の人から目下の人へ、お祝いの気持ちを込めて贈るお金のことです。
New bills are placed in special envelopes called pochibukuro. While there's no set amount for otoshidama, in our family, relatives agree on guidelines based on age (from 3,000 to 10,000 yen).
新札をポチ袋と呼ばれる専用の袋に入れて渡します。お年玉の金額は特に決められていませんが、わが家では親戚同士で年齢ごとの目安（3,000円～10,000円）を決めています。
First Shrine Visit
We visit a nearby shrine to pray for a good new year. We return the previous year's amulet and receive a new one. Drawing omikuji to divine the year ahead is also part of the fun of the first shrine visit. If the result is good, we take it home. If it's bad, we tie it at a designated place at the shrine and pray to the gods for things to turn out better.
新しい年が良い年になるよう願いを込めて、近くの神社にお参りに行きます。
1年が経ったお守りを返し、新しいお守りをいただきます。
その1年を占うおみくじを引くのも初詣の楽しみです。結果が良い場合は持ち帰ります。悪い場合は、神社で決められた場所に結び付けて、良い方向に向かうよう神様にお願いします。
How We Spend Time at Home
During New Year's, relatives gather and spend leisurely time at home. We catch up with relatives we haven't seen in a while, watch TV, and play games. At my brother-in-law's house, everyone chooses a word for the new year and writes it with a brush. This is called kakizome. Each person presents why they chose their word.
お正月は親戚が集まり、家でゆっくり過ごします。久しぶりに会う親戚と近況を話したり、テレビを見たり、ゲームをしたりします。
義弟の家では、全員が新しい年に向けての言葉を選び、毛筆で書くそうです。これを書き初めと言います。なぜその言葉を選んだのか、一人ずつ発表します。
