What Is a Chopstick Rest? (Hashioki)
Chopstick rests, known as hashioki in Japanese, are small tools used to keep the tips of chopsticks from touching the table.
箸置き（はしおき）は、箸の先がテーブルにつかないようにするための小さな道具です。

Making a Chopstick Rest from a Chopstick Sleeve
In Japan, placing chopsticks across a bowl is considered bad manners. So what should you do if there is no chopstick rest available? You can simply fold the paper chopstick sleeve to create a temporary chopstick rest. It’s quick and easy. While this is not formal etiquette, it is perfectly acceptable in casual settings.
日本では、箸を器の上に渡して置くことはマナー違反とされています。
では、箸置きがない場合はどうすればよいのでしょうか。その場合は、箸袋を軽く折ることで簡単な箸置きを作ることができます。正式な作法ではありませんが、カジュアルな場では問題ありません。
When You Don’t Have a Chopstick Rest
If you don’t have a chopstick rest or a sleeve, place the tips of your chopsticks on the table in front of your plate. Avoid placing them across a bowl. This is called watashibashi (passing chopsticks) and is considered bad manners.
器の上に箸を渡して置くことは「渡し箸」と呼ばれ、マナー違反とされています。箸置きや箸袋がない場合は、箸先をお皿の手前に置きましょう。
That said, many Japanese people are not very strict about this, so there’s no need to worry too much—but it’s useful to know.
ただし、実際にはそこまで厳密に気にしない人も多いため、過度に心配する必要はありませんが、知識として知っておくと良いでしょう。
