こんにちは、Mogです。お正月に神社でお参りをした時に、新しいお守りを授かりました。今回はお守りについてお話しますね。

What Is an Omamori?
An omamori is an item received at a shrine or temple in Japan. People carry it to avoid misfortune and to wish for good things to happen. It is believed that by wearing an item in which a divine presence resides, and doing so with gratitude, one can receive blessings.
お守りとは、神社やお寺で授与される、災厄を避けたり願いを叶えたりする目的で身につける物です。神様の力が宿っている物を感謝の気持ちを込めて身につけることでご利益がいただけるとされています。
Types of Omamori
Here are some common types of omamori.
代表的なお守りの種類を紹介しますね。
- Health omamori: for protection from illness or injury
- Traffic safety omamori: for safe driving and travel
- Academic success omamori: for passing exams and success in studies
- Relationship omamori: for good relationships and meaningful connections
- Safe childbirth omamori: for a safe delivery
- Financial luck omamori: for good fortune with money
- 健康守り：病気やケガから守る
- 交通安全守り：車や自転車の安全を願う
- 学業成就守り：試験合格や勉強の成功
- 縁結び守り：良い出会いや人とのご縁
- 安産守り：無事な出産を願う
- 金運守り：お金に関する運を願う
How Long Does an Omamori Last?
An omamori is generally kept for about one year. After it has fulfilled its role, it is returned to the shrine or temple where it was received. Shrines usually have a place called a kosatsu osamesho, where old omamori are returned with gratitude.
お守りは、一般的に1年ほどで新しいものに替えると言われています。役目を終えたお守りは、授かった神社やお寺に返します。神社には「古札納所（こさつおさめしょ）」という場所に返します。
We also returned our omamori from 2025 here and prayed with gratitude.
私たちも2025年のお守りをここに返納し、手を合わせて感謝しました。
At the shrine I visited, during the New Year period, the shrine staff perform a ritual burning of the returned omamori. Watching the flames on a cold day feels very sacred.
私がお参りした神社では、お正月の間は神社の方がこのように、お焚き上げしてくださいます。寒い日に炎を見ると神聖な気持ちになります。
Japanese Language Related to Omamori
In Japanese, we do not say that we buy an omamori. Instead, we say that we receive or are granted one. This is because an omamori is believed to be a blessing given by the gods or Buddha who reside within it.
今年のお守りを授かりました。お守りは「買う」とは言いません。お守りはそこに宿っていらっしゃる、神様や仏様からご利益を授けて頂くものなので、「授かる」「受ける」と言うのだそうです。
This Year’s Omamori
This year is the Year of the Horse, so I chose omamoris shaped like a horse. It is very cute.
今年は馬年なので、馬の形のお守りにしました。可愛いですね。
Where Should You Keep an Omamori?
It is common to keep an omamori close to you. Many people attach it to their bag, wallet, or keys, choosing a place where they want to feel protected.
お守りは、自分の身近な場所に持つのが一般的です。バッグ、財布、鍵など、「ここで見守ってほしい」と思う場所に付けるのが良いです。
My daughter once told me that she had lost the omamori she kept on her school bag. I said this to her.
娘は通学バッグに付けていたお守りを無くしてしまったと言ったので、私はこう声をかけました。
Maybe the omamori protected you by taking on something bad in your place. Let’s be grateful that you were able to spend the year safely.
「お守りはあなたの身代わりに何か困った事を引き受けてくれたのかもしれないね。無事に1年過ごさせてくださった事に感謝しようね」
I believe that the new omamori will protect her again this year.
新しいお守りは、また今年1年彼女を守ってくれる事でしょう。
