On March 3rd, marking the arrival of spring, Japan celebrates Hinamatsuri. It's a festival where dolls are displayed to pray for the healthy growth and happiness of young girls. We also brought out our hina dolls at the beginning of February.
春の訪れを告げる3月3日、日本では「ひな祭り」が行われます。人形を飾り、女の子の健やかな成長と幸せを願う行事です。2月の初めにわが家でもお雛様を出しましたよ。
今日はひな祭りについてお話しますね。
History and Origins
The origins of Hinamatsuri can be traced back to the Heian period (794-1185). It is said that back then, the ceremony involved "nagashi-bina," where paper dolls were used to absorb one's impurities and misfortunes before being set afloat on rivers. The current style of celebrating with elaborate hina dolls is said to have begun during the Edo period (1603-1867).
ひな祭りの起源は平安時代（794-1185年）にまで遡ります。当時は紙で作った人形に自分の穢れや厄を移し、川に流す「流し雛」という行事だったそうです。現在のような華やかな雛人形を飾って祝う形式は江戸時代（1603-1867年）から始まったそうです。
Types of Hina Dolls
Seven-Tiered Display
The most traditional arrangement, the seven-tiered display, features dolls and tools each with their own significance:
最も伝統的な飾り方である七段飾りには、それぞれ意味のある人形や道具が配置されます。
- Top tier: Male and female dolls representing the Emperor and Empress
- Second tier: Three court ladies (serving sake)
- Third tier: Five musicians (court officials playing instruments)
- Fourth tier: Ministers (warrior guards) and chamberlains (attendants)
- Fifth tier: Three servants
- Sixth tier: Furniture (chests and wardrobes)
- Seventh tier: Imperial carriages and kitchenware
- 最上段：天皇・皇后を表す男雛と女雛
- 二段目：三人官女（お酌をする女官）
- 三段目：五人囃子（楽器を演奏する廷臣）
- 四段目：随身（護衛の武官）と仕丁（従者）
- 五段目：三人の従者
- 六段目：調度品（箪笥や長持）
- 七段目：御所車や料理道具
My Family Home's Hina Dolls
In my family home, we had a glass case containing 10 dolls, each about 10cm tall. The small chest of drawers was crafted with working drawers. It was fun arranging each doll, tiny plate, and instrument about the size of a fingertip while asking my mother where each piece should go.
私の実家の雛人形はガラスケースの中に10cmほどの人形が10人揃っていました。小さなタンスは引き出しが開くように細工がされています。それぞれのお人形や指先ほどの大きさのお皿や楽器をどこに配置するのか母に聞きながら、並べるのも楽しみでした。
母から娘へこのようにして歴史や道具を大切にする事を伝えてきたのかもしれませんね。
Our House's Hina Dolls
The hina dolls for my daughter consist only of the male and female dolls representing the Emperor and Empress. To have them ready for my daughter's first Hinamatsuri, I spent months searching and visiting numerous stores.
私の娘のための雛人形は天皇・皇后を表す男雛と女雛のみです。娘の初めてのひな祭りに間に合うよう、何ヶ月も前から雛人形を探し、何件ものお店を回りました。
Finally, I found a shop that carefully handcrafted the dolls, dressing them one kimono layer at a time. I'll never forget the excitement I felt when I first saw their elegant and gentle facial features.
ようやく着物を一枚一枚着せて作る丁寧な手仕事をするお店を見つけました。この上品で優しいお顔立ちを初めて見た時のときめきは今でも忘れません。
Traditional Foods
Let me introduce you to Hinamatsuri foods.
ひな祭りの食べ物を紹介しますね。
Hina-arare: These are colorful, small sweet rice crackers. Their beautiful colors make them perfect for displaying alongside the dolls until the day of the festival.
ひなあられ：色とりどりの小さな甘い米菓子です。色どりも可愛いので、当日までお雛様と一緒に飾ります。
Chirashi-zushi: In our house, we make chirashi-zushi for Hinamatsuri. The colorful ingredients make the dining table festive.
ちらし寿司：わが家ではひな祭りにちらし寿司を作ります。色とりどりの具材で、食卓が華やかになります🤗
Putting Away the Dolls
After Hinamatsuri, we put away the dolls within about two weeks. To prevent moisture damage during storage, we carefully wrap each piece individually on a sunny day before storing them in boxes. While setting them up was exciting, putting them away was time-consuming and tedious due to the many parts. This festival also serves as an opportunity to teach children about proper storage.
お雛祭りが終わると、2週間以内ぐらいに片付けてしまいます。保管の時に湿気が入らないよう、天気の良い日に
一つ一つ丁寧に包んで箱にしまいます。出す時はあんなにワクワクしたのに、片付けるのは手間がかかり、面倒でした😅なにせパーツが多いですからね。この行事は片付けを子どもに教える機会でもあると思います。
Maybe this experience is why I chose to have only two dolls for my daughter. I hear smaller hina doll sets are becoming popular these days.
娘の雛人形は2人だけにしたのは、この経験からかもしれません。最近では小さな雛人形も人気なのだそうです。
The Hinamatsuri Song
Finally, let me share about the Hinamatsuri song. Both my family home's dolls and my daughter's dolls have music boxes playing this tune.
