Japanese Christmas has a unique character with less religious significance. Today, I'd like to share how I've spent Christmas over the years.
宗教的な意味合いの薄い独特な日本のクリスマス。今日は、私がクリスマスをどんな風に過ごしてきたのかをお話ししてみようと思います。
Until Age 12
When I was a child, Christmas was the most exciting day of the year. After all, I could receive presents from Santa Claus and eat delicious food and cake 😍
子どもの頃の私にとって、クリスマスは1年で1番わくわくする日でした。なんといってもサンタクロースからプレゼントをもらえ、ご馳走やケーキを食べられるのですから😍
On December 24th evening, my mother would cook Western-style dishes like gratin, grilled meat with bones, and stew. When I was a child, Christmas cake typically meant a fresh cream cake decorated with strawberries and Santa Claus ornaments. My sister and I would play rock-paper-scissors to get the Santa decoration 🤗
12月24日の夜、母はグラタンや骨付き肉のグリル、シチューなど、洋風のご飯を作ってくれました。私の子どもの頃はクリスマスケーキといえば、イチゴやサンタクロースの飾りが乗った生クリームのケーキが定番でした。サンタクロースの飾りが欲しくて、妹とじゃんけんをしたものです🤗
On this day, we were allowed to open non-alcoholic champagne for children, which made us feel a bit grown-up 🤭💕
この日は子ども向けのノンアルコールのシャンパンを開けてもらい、少し大人になった気分を味わいました🤭💕
The most exciting part was Santa Claus coming after we went to bed. We didn't have a Christmas tree, so presents were left by our pillows or in the living room.
お楽しみは、寝た後にやってくるサンタクロースです。うちにはクリスマスツリーはなく、枕元やリビングにプレゼントが置いてありました。
After I learned Santa's true identity, the presents stopped, but I have fond memories of playing Christmas songs with my sister and eating my mother's special dishes.
サンタクロースの正体を知った頃からプレゼントはなくなりましたが、妹とクリスマスソングを演奏したり、母のご馳走を食べたのは良い思い出です。
🎂Characteristics
Japanese Christmas focuses on Christmas Eve (December 24th). Many families buy Christmas cakes. Like my family, many households stop giving presents once children reach junior high school age (12 years old).
Some children pretend to still believe in Santa Claus in front of their parents because they heard from friends that once you find out Santa's true identity, you won't get presents anymore 😂
日本のクリスマスは24日の夜がメインです。クリスマスケーキも購入する家庭が多いと思います。プレゼントはわが家のように、小学生（12歳）までで終える家庭が多いようです。
サンタクロースの正体を知ってしまったら、プレゼントが来なくなったというエピソードを友達から聞き、親の前では信じているふりをする子もいます😂
During My Student Years
From around middle and high school, I started celebrating Christmas with friends.
中高生ぐらいから、友達とクリスマスを祝うようになりました。
We enjoyed exchanging presents with agreed-upon price limits 🎁🤗
友達と金額を決めて、プレゼント交換をするのが楽しみでした🎁🤗
After Becoming an Adult
When I had a partner, we would go see illuminations or enjoy luxurious meals at French restaurants. When I was single, I spent time at home parties with friends.
恋人がいる時はイルミネーションを見に行ったり、フレンチレストランなどで贅沢な食事を楽しんだりしました。恋人がいない時は、友達とホームパーティーをして過ごしていました。
Everywhere you went on this day, people seemed to be having fun, so I didn't want to spend it alone.
この日はどこに行っても楽しそうな人ばかりで、あまり1人で過ごしたくないと感じていました。

In Japan, Christmas is positioned as an event for young children, friends, and couples.
日本ではクリスマスは、幼い子ども、友達や恋人同士のイベントという位置づけです。
Until My Daughter Turned 12
After my daughter was born, I bought a Christmas tree. We decorate it together to build up the excitement.
娘が生まれてからクリスマスツリーを買いました。飾り付けを一緒にして、ワクワク感を盛り上げます。
Western Christmas items have become easier to buy. For example, advent calendars, hexenhaus kits, and even Bûche de Noël cakes. Foreign cultural elements bring so much joy 🥰🎉✨
欧米のクリスマスの要素を取り入れたグッズも購入しやすくなりました。例えばアドベントカレンダー、ヘクセンハウスのキット、ケーキもブッシュドノエルなど。海外の文化は心が躍る物が多いですね🥰🎉✨
Since there's no Christmas holiday in Japan, it's quite challenging for working people to spend time cooking. In our house, when Christmas didn't fall on a weekend, we would celebrate on the nearest weekend 😅
日本にはクリスマス休暇がないので、仕事をしている人は料理に時間を使うのもなかなか大変です。わが家では、クリスマスが土日でない時は、クリスマス直前の土日にクリスマスイベントをしていました😅
We usually buy the cake. When my daughter was small, sometimes we'd buy just the sponge cake and enjoy decorating it together.
ケーキは購入することが多いです。子どもが小さい時は、スポンジケーキだけ買ってきて、飾り付けを一緒に楽しむこともありました。
In our house, we make it a point to cook a whole roasted chicken. It's quite difficult to find whole chickens in Japan.
わが家は丸鶏のグリルだけは作ることにしています。日本では丸鶏はなかなか売っていないので、探すのが大変です。
In Japan, it's popular to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas. Reservations for Christmas sets start around November. One year, when we couldn't get a whole chicken, I called KFC right before Christmas, but they were sold out. It's really popular!
日本ではクリスマスにケンタッキーフライドチキンを食べるのが流行っています。11月くらいにクリスマスセットの予約受付が始まります。ある年、丸鶏が手に入らなくて、クリスマス直前にケンタッキーに予約電話をしたら、なんと売り切れでした。人気なんですねぇ。
As a parent, it's a happy time thinking about what presents to buy while imagining my daughter's delighted face 🤗
親になって、クリスマスプレゼントに娘が喜ぶ顔を想像しながら、何を買おうか考えるのも幸せな時間です🤗

We take down the Christmas tree on December 26th to prepare for New Year's events. It's too busy 😵💫💫
クリスマスが終わると26日にはツリーを片付けます。年末年始のイベントの準備をするためです。忙しすぎる😵💫💫
I'm newly grateful to my parents who created Christmas events for us during such a busy season.
親はこんな忙しい時期に、私たちを楽しませるためにクリスマスイベントをしてくれていたんだなぁと、改めて感謝しています。
After My Daughter Entered Middle School
This year, when I was about to put up the Christmas tree, my daughter said, "It's too much trouble to decorate, we don't need a tree this year." I guess it's that time already.This year, we're only using small Christmas decorations.
今年、クリスマスツリーを出そうとしていると、娘が「飾るのが面倒だから今年はツリーはいらない」と言いました。そろそろそういう時期なんですね。
今年のクリスマス飾りは、小さいものだけにしました。
German Christmas markets are gradually becoming popular in Japan. We decided to go to the Christmas market in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture.
ドイツのクリスマスマーケットが、日本でも少しずつ流行り始めています。兵庫県神戸市で行われるクリスマスマーケットに娘と行くことにしました。
If we find nice Christmas decorations, I plan to buy them.
素敵なクリスマスの飾りを見つけたら、買おうと思っています。
As a mother, I'm happy to go shopping together with my daughter 🤗✨
娘と一緒に買い物するのも、母としては嬉しい時間です🤗✨
