June is the rainy season in Japan. The rainy season lasts about one and a half months.
Sightseeing on rainy days may be a bit difficult, but let me introduce some of the beautiful things you can only see during this season.
日本では6月は梅雨のシーズンです。梅雨は約1ヶ月半ほど続きます。
雨の日の観光は少し大変かもしれませんが、この時期にしか見られない美しいものを紹介しますね。
Fireflies
It is during the rainy season that fireflies can be seen flying around. Fireflies are found in clear rivers and ponds. Fireflies fly in large numbers on days when there is no moonlight, it is cloudy, hot and humid, and there is no wind. Fireflies can be seen from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., with a peak around 8:00 p.m.
ホタルが飛び交うのを見られるのは梅雨です。ホタルは澄んだ川や池などに生息します。「月明かりがない」「曇っている」「蒸し暑い」「風がない」この条件の日にホタルがたくさん飛びます。夜の7時半から9時位まで、ピークは8時くらいです。

Cautions for Viewing Fireflies
Fireflies are delicate creatures. To protect the environment for fireflies, please be sure to observe the following
- Do not make loud noises.
- Do not use lights.
- Do not pollute the river.
- Do not catch them.
ホタルは繊細な生き物です。ホタルの環境を守るために必ず以下の事を守ってください。
- 大きな声を出さない。
- ライトを使わない。
- 川を汚さない。
- 捕まえない。
Fireflies emit light as the male courts the female. Let's gently watch over their little love 😉.
ホタルはオスがメスに求愛するために光ります。小さな恋をそっと見守りたいですね😉

My memories of Firefly
I went to see fireflies with a friend from Canada.
We had some time before nightfall, and she took lots of pictures of the paddy fields and listened carefully, saying she could hear the cool croaking of the frogs.
Thanks to her, I first noticed the beauty of a commonplace landscape that I take for granted.
It would be wonderful if we could find the beauty that is unique to that season.
カナダ出身の友人とホタルを見に行った時の事です。
日暮れまでには時間があり、彼女は水田の写真をたくさん撮り、カエルの鳴き声が涼やかに聞こえると言い、耳を澄ませました。
彼女のおかげで、私は当たり前のありふれた風景の美しさに初めて気づいたのです。
その季節にしかない美しさを見つけられたら、素敵ですね。
Japanese Gardens are Beautiful in the Rain
It would be a shame if it rains when you plan to go sightseeing.
However, Japanese gardens on rainy days have a completely different beauty from those on sunny days.
Trees and mosses become more lively in the rain, and the color of cobblestones becomes darker and the contrast becomes clearer. The temples and shrines that are crowded with tourists on sunny days can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace on rainy days.
観光しようと思ったのに、雨が降ったら残念ですよね。
でも、雨の日の日本庭園には晴れた日と全く違う美しさがあります。
木々や苔は雨によって生き生きとしますし、石畳の色も濃くなりコントラストがはっきりしてくるのです。晴れた時には観光客で混む寺社もゆっくり楽しむ事ができます。
If you can view the Japanese garden from inside a building, please listen carefully to the sound of the rain. Japanese gardens are designed for the enjoyment of all nature.
建物の中から日本庭園を眺められるなら、ぜひ雨の音にも耳を澄ませてみてください。日本庭園は全ての自然を楽しむために作られています。
hydrangea
June is also the season of hydrangeas.
Mimuroto-ji Temple is famous for hydrangeas in Kyoto.
The hydrangea garden, open from June to early July, is home to as many as 2 million hydrangea plants. I have been there several times. It is quite large and well worth seeing.
6月は紫陽花（あじさい）の季節でもあります。
京都で紫陽花と言えば、「三室戸寺（みむろとじ）」が有名です。
6月から7月はじめまで開かれる紫陽花園には200万株もの紫陽花が植えられています。私も何度か行ったことがあります。かなり広く、見応えがありますよ。
In addition to hydrangeas, Mimuroto-ji Temple is also famous for its seasonal flowers, including lotus flowers starting in July, and an event held at the beginning of July in which sake is poured into lotus leaves and drunk from the stems. I would like to visit there someday.
三室戸寺では紫陽花だけでなく、季節それぞれの花が楽しめます。7月からはハスの花も見られます。7月初めにハスの葉に日本酒を入れ、茎から飲むイベントが行われます。いつか行ってみたいと思っています。
I wonder what sake tastes like through the lotus stems. I'll report back if I go 😉.
ハスの茎を通した日本酒ってどんな味がするんだろう。行ったらリポートしますね😉
