Last time, we talked about the folklorist Kunio Yanagita. The Miki House, where he lived for one year during his childhood, is now a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and I stayed there.
前回、民俗学者の柳田国男についてお話しましたね。彼が幼少期に1年暮らした三木家は現在、有形文化財となっており、私はそこに宿泊しました。
The Inspiration for My Trip

The inspiration for this trip was this photo of a hotel called NIPPONIA Harima Fukusaki.
私がこの旅をしようと思ったきっかけはNIPPONIA播磨福崎というホテルのこの写真です。
I love books so much that I would like to live in a library. 🤭 With thoughts like "How happy I would be if I could sleep surrounded by books ✨ I want to see cultural property architecture up close 💕," I immediately made a reservation. It's my first solo trip in a while 👍
私は図書館で暮らしたいと思うほど、本好きです。🤭「本に囲まれて寝られたら、どんなに幸せだろう✨文化財の建築を間近で見てみたい💕」との思いで、すぐに予約をしました。久しぶりのひとり旅です👍
The Concept of the Inn
This inn uses the houses, storehouses, and former post office of the Miki family, which have become Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, as hotels and restaurants.
ここの宿は有形文化財となった三木家の家屋や蔵、旧郵便局をホテルやレストランとして使っています。
The Miki family became a central figure in local politics and culture as the Daishoya (chief village headman) of the Himeji Domain in 1655. Generation after generation, they were passionate about scholarship, with over 4,000 high-quality books in their collection, and they actively interacted with intellectuals.
三木家は1655年に姫路藩の大庄屋として地域の政治と文化の中心的存在となってきました。代々、学問に熱心で、良質な4000冊以上の蔵書があり、知識人との交流も盛んだったそうです。
Because of this heritage, books are placed throughout this inn.
その由来から、この宿ではいたるところに本が置かれています。
Former Tsujikawa Post Office (Tangible Cultural Property)
I stayed in a building that was once used as a post office. The 9th head of the Miki family became the postmaster, and it was built in 1879 (Meiji 12). It is now registered as a Tangible Cultural Property, with the first floor used as a book café and the second floor as accommodation.
私が宿泊したのはかつて郵便局として使われていた建物です。三木家の9代目当主が局長となり、明治12年（1879年）に建設されました。現在は有形文化財として登録され、1階はブックカフェ、2階は宿泊施設として使われています。
What is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property
Registered Tangible Cultural Properties are established to broadly pass down to future generations the diverse and numerous modern cultural property buildings that are facing the risk of disappearing before receiving social evaluation due to recent land development, urban planning progress, lifestyle changes, etc.
登録有形文化財とは、近年の国土開発や都市計画の進展、生活様式の変化等により、社会的評価を受けるまもなく消滅の危機に晒されている多種多様かつ大量の近代等の文化財建造物を後世に幅広く継承していくために作られたものです。

Yokai Book Café (1st Floor)
On the day I stayed, there were no other guests, so I was allowed to use the entire former post office building all to myself. The former post office where I stayed has a book café on the first floor. After 3 PM, the café closes and becomes a relaxation space for guests.
ちょうど私が宿泊した日は、他の宿泊者がいなかったため、旧郵便局の一棟を私一人で使わせてもらえる事になりました。私が泊まった旧郵便局は1階がブックカフェとなっています。15時以降、カフェは営業を終え、宿泊者用のくつろぎスペースとなります。
What surprised me a bit was that the theme of this book café was yokai (Japanese supernatural creatures).
Looking around, I could see the covers of yokai picture books lined up, staring at me 😱
Wait a minute! Including the café, I'm using this entire building, this large space, by myself? 😳
少し驚いたのは、このブックカフェのテーマが、妖怪だったことです。
見渡すと妖怪の絵本の表紙が並んで、こちらを見ています😱
ちょっと待って！カフェも含め1棟、この広いスペースを1人で使うの？😳
At this inn, there are no staff at night, and instead, guests carry a mobile phone with a direct line to the security company. I clutched the mobile phone in my pocket.
This might be how I felt when I first slept alone in my own room as a child.
Thinking this was also a little adventure, I read a few picture books.
この宿では、夜中はスタッフはおらず、その代わり宿泊者は警備会社直通の携帯電話を持ちます。ポケットに入れた携帯電話を握りしめました。
幼い頃、自分の部屋で初めて1人で寝る時って、こんな気持ちだったかも。
これもちょっとした冒険だ、と絵本を何冊か読んでみました。
What are Yokai
Yokai are bizarre and abnormal phenomena beyond human understanding, or beings with mysterious powers that cause such phenomena.
妖怪は人間の理解を超える奇怪で異常な現象、あるいは、それらの現象を起こす不可思議な力を持つものです。
In Japan, it has been believed that gods dwell in all nature and natural phenomena. Yokai might be a similar concept. Unique yokai also appear in the books where Kunio Yanagita compiled local legends.
日本ではあらゆる自然や自然現象に神が宿っていると考えられてきました。妖怪もそれに近い発想かもしれませんね。柳田国男が地方の言い伝えをまとめた本にも個性的な妖怪が出てきます。
