February 14th is Valentine's Day. While it's known worldwide as a day to celebrate love, in Japan, it might be a heart-pounding day for those with secret crushes. Today, I'll introduce you to Valentine's Day in Japan.
2月14日はバレンタインデーですね。
世界中で愛を祝う日として知られていますが、日本では片思いをしている人にとっては、ちょっとドキドキする日かもしれません。今日は日本のバレンタインデーについて紹介しますね。
The Basics of Japanese Valentine's Day
In Japan, Valentine's Day was established in 1935 as a marketing strategy by confectionery companies, setting it as a day for women to give chocolates to men they like as a confession of their feelings. It became a cultural norm in Japan. Back then, it wasn't common for women to confess their feelings to men. I remember everyone being restless around Valentine's Day during our school days 🤭💕
日本ではバレンタインデーは1935年、お菓子メーカーの戦略で女性が好きな人にチョコをあげて、告白する日として設定し、日本で定着しました。
その時代は女性が男性に告白をする時代ではなかったのです。
学生の頃、バレンタイン前後はみんなソワソワしていたような気がします🤭💕
Types of Chocolate
In Japanese Valentine's Day, there are mainly two types of chocolate.
日本のバレンタインデーには、大きく分けて二種類のチョコレートがあります。
Honmei Choco (True Feelings Chocolate)
Honmei choco is chocolate given as an expression of love to a romantic partner or someone you truly have feelings for. In this case, people often choose handmade or premium chocolate.
本命チョコとは、真心を込めて恋人や本当に好きな人に愛情表現として贈るチョコレートです。
この場合、手作りや高級チョコレートを選ぶことが多いです。
Giri Choco (Obligation Chocolate)
Giri choco is chocolate given out of courtesy or gratitude, without any romantic feelings attached. For example, chocolate given to workplace colleagues is called giri choco 😉 Convenience stores and supermarkets sell individually wrapped chocolates that are easy to distribute.
義理チョコとは特別な感情がなくても、普段のお礼や気遣いから贈るチョコレートです。
例えば、職場の同僚などに渡すチョコレートは義理チョコと言われます😉
コンビニやスーパーでは、配りやすいように小分けになったチョコレートが売っています。
Some people also exchange chocolates with friends or buy themselves expensive chocolates as a treat.
他にも友達同士で交換したり、自分へのご褒美として、ちょっと高級なチョコレートを買う人もいます。
White Day
White Day is on March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine's Day, when men give return gifts to those who gave them chocolates on Valentine's Day. The return gift is often worth two to three times the value of the received chocolate.
ホワイトデーは3月14日、バレンタインデーのちょうど1ヶ月後に男性がバレンタインデーにもらったチョコレートのお返しをする日です。
もらったチョコレートの2〜3倍の価値のものを贈ることが多いです。
Recent Trends
While chocolate exchange at workplaces and schools has been a social custom expressing connection and gratitude, it's becoming more flexible lately to accommodate individual preferences and values.
職場や学校でのチョコレート交換は人々の繋がりや感謝の気持ちを表現する社交行事ですが、最近は個人の好みや価値観に合わせて柔軟になりつつあります。
Both giving and receiving giri choco can feel pressuring for some people. I also stopped personally distributing chocolates at my company a few years ago. When I receive chocolate from female colleagues on Valentine's Day, I make sure to give something in return on White Day.
義理チョコはあげる人ももらう人もプレッシャーに感じる場合もあります。
私も数年前から、会社でチョコレートを個人的に配るのをやめました。
バレンタインデーに女性の同僚からチョコレートをいただいた場合は、ホワイトデーにお返しをする事にしています。
