Recently, my daughter and I often go to karaoke. Karaoke is singing along with instrumental music without vocals. There are many karaoke establishments in Japan.
最近、私と娘はカラオケをよくします。カラオケとは伴奏のみを再生して歌うことです。日本にはカラオケの専門店がたくさんあります。

I sometimes hum while cooking. I also like to sing while soaking in the bathtub. When I sing in the bathroom, the echo makes me feel like I'm a better singer🤭👍
私は料理をしながら、鼻歌を歌うことがあります。バスタブに浸かりながら、歌うのも好きです。お風呂で歌うと音が反響して、ちょっと上手になった気がします🤭👍
However, houses in Japan are small and close to each other. Singing loudly could disturb the neighbors, and it's a bit embarrassing😅
ただ、日本の家は狭く、隣の家との距離も近いのです。大きな声で歌うと近所に迷惑がかかりますし、少し恥ずかしいものです😅
When I want to sing my heart out, I go to a karaoke establishment. These establishments are called Karaoke Box.
もっと思い切り歌いたい！というときに、カラオケ専門店へ行きます。カラオケの専門店のことをカラオケBoxと呼びます。

Karaoke Box has private rooms, so no strangers will hear you sing.
カラオケBoxは個室制なので、知らない人に歌を聞かれることはありません。
You can go with family, friends, or colleagues, and I've heard many people enjoy karaoke alone too.
家族や友人同士、会社の同僚と行くこともありますし、1人でカラオケを楽しむ人も多いと聞きます。
The rooms are soundproof, so some people use them for instrument practice. It's difficult to practice musical instruments at home in Japan😅
カラオケの部屋は防音設備が整っているので、楽器の練習をする人もいます。日本では家で楽器の練習がしづらい環境なのです😅
Pricing
Prices vary by location and time of day, but it typically costs 500-1,500 yen per person per hour.
お店や時間帯によって料金は異なりますが、1時間あたり500～1,500円/人程度です。
I often use the "Free Time" system, which allows unlimited use during specified hours for a fixed price.
私がよく利用するのは、フリータイムという指定された時間内なら定額で利用できる料金システムです。
At reception, you tell them how many people and how long you'll stay, and they'll assign you a room number. Payment is made when you leave.
受付で利用人数と時間を伝えると、部屋番号を案内してもらえます。支払いは後払いです。
Facilities
There are private rooms that can accommodate from 3 to about 10 people.
3人から10人程度まで収容できる個室が並んでいます。
Each room is equipped with a karaoke machine, microphone, and a tablet for selecting songs.
部屋にはカラオケの機械とマイク、曲を選ぶためのタブレットが設置されています。
The tablet's search function is excellent - even if you forget the song title, you can search by lyrics or browse popular songs by era.
このタブレットの検索機能が優秀で、曲名を忘れた時でも歌詞や年代別の人気曲から検索することができます。
Food and Drinks
Karaoke places offer all-you-can-drink plans for a fixed fee. You can get your drinks from the server yourself.
カラオケには一定料金で飲み物が飲み放題になるプランがあります。自分でサーバーに飲みたい飲み物を取りに行きます。
You can also order light meals.
軽食なども注文することができます。
How to Enjoy
The karaoke screen displays lyrics. There are no vocal tracks, only instrumental music.
カラオケでは画面に歌詞が表示されます。歌声は流れず、伴奏音楽のみが流れます。
After each song, you can see how many calories you burned and get a score for your performance. It's fun to compete with each other.
一曲歌い終わると、消費カロリーや歌の採点結果を表示することもできます。点数を競い合うのも楽しいですね。
Some places also lend tambourines and maracas.
また、タンバリンやマラカスの貸し出しをしているお店もあります。
