Although Nara is close to Kyoto where I live, I decided to stay overnight after finding a lovely newly opened hotel.
奈良は私の住んでいる京都から近いのですが、オープンしたばかりの素敵なホテルを見つけたので、一泊することにしました。
This time, I'll introduce you to some delicious foods I ate in Naramachi, an area close to Kintetsu Nara Station.
今回は、ならまちという近鉄奈良駅から近いエリアで食べた美味しい物を紹介しますね。
After storing our luggage in the lockers at the basement of Kintetsu Nara Station, Naramachi is right outside the station. Naramachi has many old townscapes and cute shops 🤗 Although it was raining that day, there was no worry about getting wet thanks to the arcade.
近鉄奈良駅の地下のロッカーに荷物を預け、駅を出たらすぐならまちです。
ならまちでは古い街並みや可愛い雑貨屋さんがたくさんあります🤗
この日は雨が降っていたのですが、アーケードがあるので、濡れる心配もありません。
Yomogi Mochi at Nakatanido
When you come to Naramachi, first try the yomogi mochi at Nakatanido. If you're lucky, you can see them pounding mochi at super high speed 😆 I bought and ate freshly pounded mochi. It's so soft it melts in your mouth 😍
ならまちに来たら、中谷堂のよもぎ餅をまず食べてみてください。
タイミングが良ければ、超高速でお餅をつく様子も見られます😆
つきたてのお餅を買って食べました。
柔らかくて口の中でトロけます😍

Shaved Ice at Housekibako
Housekibako is a famous shaved ice shop. While it usually has long lines in summer, we could enter right away since it was a rainy autumn day 👍 I had always wanted to try their shaved ice.
ほうせき箱は有名なかき氷屋さんです。夏は行列ができているこの店も、秋で雨だったせいか、すぐに入れました👍一度ここのかき氷を食べてみたかったんです。
Nara has many shaved ice shops. This seems to be related to Himuro Shrine.
奈良にはかき氷屋さんがたくさんあるのです。それには氷室神社が関係しているようです。
Inside the shop, there was information about Himuro Shrine and the origin of the shop's name.
店内に、氷室神社の事とお店の名前の由来が書いてありました。
The Ice-Loving Deity: Himuro Shrine
During the Nara period (710-794), many ice ponds and ice houses were built in Nara, and Himuro Shrine would present ice made there during winter to the Imperial Court. They also used the thickness of the ice to predict harvests, and these results were used in court policies.
奈良時代（710-794）、奈良の地には氷池や氷室が多く造られ、氷室神社は冬の間にそこで作られた氷を宮中に献上していました。また、氷の厚さで豊作を占い、その結果は朝廷の政策に役立てられていました。
Currently, it is enshrined as the guardian deity of freezing, refrigeration, and ice-making businesses.
現在では冷凍、冷蔵、製氷販売業の守護神として、祀られているのだそうです。
I didn't know about Himuro Shrine until I visited Housekibako. I'd like to visit it someday.
ほうせき箱に行くまでは、氷室神社の事を知りませんでした。いつか訪れてみたいなぁ。

Origin of the Shop's Name
In old Nara, snacks were called "houseki" (jewels). In times when sweets were precious, people must have eagerly awaited and treasured their snack time.
奈良では昔、おやつの事を「ほうせき」と言っていたそうです。
甘い物が貴重だった時代、おやつを食べる時間を心待ちにし、大切にしていたのでしょうね。
Luxurious Shaved Ice for Adults
What I ordered was a luxurious shaved ice topped with candied chestnuts in their skin.
さて、私が注文したのは栗の渋皮煮がのっている贅沢なかき氷でした。

The shaved ice had cream inside. It also used rum, making it a shaved ice for adults 🤗 I've never had shaved ice like this before 💕
かき氷の中にはクリームが入っていました。ラム酒も使われていて、大人のためのかき氷でした🤗
こんなかき氷初めてです💕
My friend had the matcha shaved ice. This one uses matcha generously and has a light taste. It seems like you could eat it endlessly.
友人が食べたのは抹茶のかき氷です。こちらは抹茶が贅沢に使われていて、あっさりしています。いくらでも食べられそう。

After this, we went to Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten, a shop that has continued since the Edo period. I had been looking forward to visiting this main store in Nara, as I had already liked this shop.
この後、中川政七商店という江戸時代から続くお店に行きました。前から好きだったこのお店の本店が奈良にあると知り、訪れるのを楽しみにしていたのです。
