What is Animal Shogi?

Today, I'd like to introduce you to a board gameI've been obsessed with recently: Animal Shogi(Dobutsu Shogi).
今日は最近私が夢中になっているボードゲーム、どうぶつしょうぎをご紹介します。

Since January this year, I've been enjoying Animal Shogi with my colleagues twice a week during our lunch breaks.
今年の1月から週に2回、ランチタイムに同僚とどうぶつしょうぎを楽しんでいます。

Although it was originally created for children, this game is surprisingly challenging and has a lot of depth to it.
子ども向けに作られたゲームですが、これがなかなか難しくて奥が深いのです。

Animal Shogi is a simplified version of Japanese chess (Shogi), designed to be accessible to young players. However, its simple rules belie a complex strategy game that can be enjoyed by players of all ages.
どうぶつしょうぎは、子どもでも楽しめるように作られた日本の将棋の簡易版です。しかし、そのシンプルなルールの裏には、あらゆる年齢の人が楽しめる複雑な戦略ゲームが隠れています。

What makes Animal Shogi particularly interesting for adults is its quick gameplay and the depth of strategy possible even with such a limited number of pieces. It's a perfect game for short breaks or for  those looking to dip their toes into the world of strategy board games.
大人にとってどうぶつしょうぎが特に面白いのは、ゲーム展開が早く、限られた数の駒でも深い戦略が可能なことです。短い休憩時間に楽しむのに最適で、戦略的ボードゲームの世界に足を踏み入れたい人にもぴったりです。

Now, let me explain the rules 😉
では、ルールの説明からしますね😉

Game Rules

Animal Shogi is a simple yet profound game. Once you know the rules, anyone can enjoy it immediately, which is part of its charm.
どうぶつしょうぎは、シンプルながら奥深いゲームです。ルールを知れば、誰でもすぐに楽しめるのが魅力です。

Types of pieces and how they move:

駒の種類と動き方：

The direction in which the pieces advance is marked with a red dot.

それぞれの駒が進める方向に赤い印がついています。

1. Lion🦁: Can move one square in any of the 8 directions (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
   It's like the king in chess.
2. Elephant🐘: Can move one square diagonally in any of the 4 directions.
3. Giraffe🦒: Can move one square in any of the 4 directions (horizontally or vertically).
4. Chick🐤: Can only move forward one square. When it enters the opponent's territory, it becomes a "Hen" and can move more freely.

1. ライオン🦁：横、縦、斜めの8方向に1マス動けます。
   王様のような存在です。
2. ぞう🐘：斜めの4方向に1マス動けます。
3. きりん🦒：横と縦の4方向に1マス動けます。
4. ひよこ🐤：前にのみ1マス進めます。相手陣地に入ると
   「にわとり」に成り、より自由に動けるようになります。

Setup:

セットアップ：

• Use a small 3x4 square board.
• Each player has 4 pieces: 1 Lion, 1 Elephant, 1 Giraffe, and 1 Chick.
• Initial placement: In the front row from left to right, place the Elephant, Lion, and Giraffe.
  The Chick is placed in front of the Lion.
• 3×4マスの小さな盤を使用します。
• 各プレイヤーは、ライオン1枚、ぞう1枚、きりん1枚、ひよこ1枚の計4枚の駒を持ちます。
• 初期配置は、一番手前の行の左から、ぞう、ライオン、きりんを置きます。ライオンの上の行にひよこを置きます。

Game progression:

ゲームの進行：

1. Decide who goes first, then take turns moving one piece at a time.
2. If your piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, you can capture that piece.
3. Captured pieces become your own and can be dropped onto any empty square on the board in later turns.
4. When a Chick reaches the farthest row in the opponent's territory, it is flipped to become a "Hen".
   A Hen can move one square in 6 directions:
   forward, backward, left, right, and diagonally forward.

1. 先手後手を決め、交互に1手ずつ駒を動かします。
2. 相手の駒のいるマスに自分の駒が移動すると、その駒を取ることができます。
3. 取った駒は自分の持ち駒となり、後のターンで盤上の空いているマスに打つことができます。
4. ひよこが相手陣地の最奥列に到達すると、裏返して「にわとり」になります。にわとりは前後左右斜めの6方向に1マス動けます。

Winning conditions:

勝利条件：

You win if any of the following occurs:

1. Capture the opponent's Lion
2. Move your Lion to the farthest row in the opponent's territory
3. Put your opponent in a position where they have no legal moves (checkmate)

以下のいずれかの状況で勝利となります。

1. 相手のライオンを取る
2. 自分のライオンを相手陣地の最奥列に到達させる
3. 相手が合法手を持たない（詰み）状態にする

It's simple, but this can be quite difficult 😅 If you want to move to a square where your own piece is, you can't move. And when you place your piece on a square your opponent can move to, you need to protect it with other pieces, or it will be captured immediately 😱
シンプルですが、これがなかなか難しい😅行きたいマスに自分のコマがあると、動かせないし、相手の進めるマスに自分のコマを置く時は、他のコマで守りながら進めないとすぐ取られてしまいます😱

Animal Shogi is similar to Shogi

This strategy is very similar to the endgame strategy in Shogi. The Shogi board is very large, so it takes a very long time to reach the endgame.
これは将棋の最終局面の戦略ととてもよく似ています。
将棋盤はとても広いので、最終局面に至るまでにはとても長い時間がかかります。

In the case of Animal Shogi, the Chicks are facing each other from the start, so you can experience the thrill of capturing and being captured right from the beginning.
その点、どうぶつしょうぎの場合は、最初からひよこが向かい合わせになっていますので、最初からコマを取ったり、取られたりするドキドキを味わう事ができます。

A Shogi match takes at least 2-3 hours, even if it's short, but we usually spend about 30 minutes at most on
Animal Shogi. This makes it easy to start, doesn't it?
将棋の対局には短くても2〜3時間くらいかかりますが、私達がどうぶつしょうぎにかける時間は長くてもだいたい30分程度です。これなら気軽に始められますよね。

The rules are also simple, so the target age is as young as 3 years old. It can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from children to adults.
ルールもシンプルなので、対象年齢はなんと3歳からです。
子供から大人まで幅広く楽しむ事ができるのです。

Shogi Trends in Japan

In recent years, the rise of young talent in the Japanese Shogi world has been remarkable, with Sota Fujii's (藤井聡太) achievements making big headlines.
近年、日本の将棋界では若い才能の台頭が目覚ましく、特に藤井聡太（ふじい そうた）さんの活躍が大きな話題を呼んでいます。

Sota Fujii's achievements:

藤井聡太さんの活躍：

• Made his professional debut at the age of 14 in 2016
• Set a new record of 29 consecutive wins in 2017
• Became the youngest title holder (Kisei) at the age of 18 in 2020
• Subsequently won multiple titles and became the youngest to hold all eight major titles
• 2016年、14歳でプロ棋士デビュー
• 2017年、29連勝の新記録を樹立
• 2020年、18歳で最年少タイトル獲得（棋聖）
• その後も複数のタイトルを獲得し、史上最年少で八大タイトルを制覇

With Fujii's emergence, interest in Shogi has dramatically increased, and a Shogi boom has occurred among children.
藤井さんの登場により、将棋への注目度が飛躍的に高まり、子供たちの間でも将棋ブームが起きています。

Study methods using AI:

AIを使った勉強法：

Fujii and other young professional players are actively using AI for their research.
藤井さんを含む現代の若手棋士たちは、AIを積極的に活用して研究を行っています。

1. Using computer Shogi software:
   • Learn new strategies and openings by playing against strong AI
   • Have AI analyze their own games to find areas for improvement
2. コンピュータ将棋ソフトの活用：
   • 強豪AIとの対局で、新しい戦略や定跡を学ぶ
   • 自身の対局をAIに分析してもらい、改善点を見つける

2. Analysis of vast amounts of game records:
   • Efficiently study past masterpieces and recent games using AI
   • Research the best moves in specific positions with AI
3. 膨大な棋譜データの分析：
   • AIを使って過去の名局や最新の対局を効率的に研究

Through these AI-assisted study methods, the skills of young players are rapidly improving. At the same time, discussions about coexistence with AI and the importance of human creativity are ongoing.
このようなAIを活用した勉強法により、若手棋士たちの実力は急速に向上しています。同時に、AIとの共存や人間ならではの創造性の重要性も議論されています。

Sota Fujii played a lot of Animal Shogi when he was young. Knowing this, I decided to learn Shogi strategies through Animal Shogi.
藤井聡太くんは幼い頃どうぶつしょうぎでたくさん遊んだのだそうです。それを知って、私もどうぶつしょうぎで、将棋の戦略を学ぶ事にしました。

I have an aspiration for Shogi. Someday, I would like to go to a Shogi dojo and learn Shogi.
A Shogi dojo is a place where people who are learning Shogi gather and enjoy playing matches.
私は将棋に憧れを持っています。いつか将棋道場に行って、将棋を学んでみたいです。
将棋道場というのは、将棋を学ぶ人たちが集まり、対局を楽しむ場所です。
