Arrival times for trains in Japan are precise.
If you want to arrive at your destination at a precise time, for example, for an examination or an interview, I recommend using trains rather than buses.
Especially during events such as festivals in Kyoto, the streets can be crowded and buses are almost always out of service.
日本の電車の到着時間は正確です。
例えば受験や面接など、正確な時間に目的地に到着したい時はバスよりも電車を使うのをおすすめします。
特に京都のお祭りなどのイベントの時は道が混み、バスがほとんど動かなくなる事があります。
When a train is delayed for more than 3 minutes, the time display board on the platform will show how many minutes it will be delayed and an apology will be announced. (They can catch up for about 2 minutes.)
3分以上電車が遅延する時は、ホームの時刻表示板に何分遅れるか表示され、お詫びのアナウンスが流れます。（2分程度なら取り戻せるのだそうです）
Fewer flextime systems
Japan may be the world's strictest country with regard to time. Although an increasing number of companies have introduced flextime systems that allow workers to choose their own work hours, less than 6% of companies do so. It may be hard for workers. They have to wake up early in the morning and trains are very crowded during commuting hours.
Thanks to this, though, there is one advantage in Japan: service is rarely not available on time.
日本は時間に対して世界で1番厳しい国かもしれません。出勤時間を自由に選べるフレックスタイム制を導入している会社は増えてきていますが6％未満と、少ないのです。働く人にとっては大変かもしれませんね。朝は早起きしなくてはならないし、通勤時間の電車はとても混みます。
そのおかげで日本では、時間通りにサービスが受けられない事はほとんどないというメリットもありますけどね。

Contact your workplace first
If you check the train delay information at the station and find that you will not be able to make it to work on time, first contact your supervisor. Tell him or her how long the train will be delayed and what time you will arrive at work.
If your immediate supervisor is not at work, ask someone else to inform him or her.
駅で電車の遅延情報を確認し、仕事の時間に間に合わないことが分かったら、まず上司に連絡します。電車がどれくらい遅延し、職場に到着する時間はだいたい何時頃になるのかを伝えます。
直属の上司が出社していない場合は、他の人に伝えてもらいます。
After Arriving at Work
When you arrive at work, greet your supervisor and co-workers. If your tardiness has affected anyone, you may want to thank them for their time.
Depending on your workplace, you may have to submit a certificate that your train was late. This certificate is called a "delay certificate. At my company, by submitting a "certificate of delay," the amount of tardiness will not be deducted from your salary.
職場に到着したら、上司や同僚に挨拶をします。遅刻したことで誰かに影響が出てしまった場合は、お礼を伝えた方が良いでしょう。
職場にもよりますが、電車が遅れた証明書の提出をしなくてはならないかもしれません。この証明書を「遅延証明書」と言います。私の会社では「遅延証明書」を提出する事で、給与から遅刻分を引かれる事はなくなります。
How to submit the certificate depends on the company, so please ask someone at the company.
提出の仕方は会社によりますので、会社の人に聞いてみてください。
At my company, I search for "遅延証明書（ちえんしょうめいしょ）delay certificate" on my phone or computer, and it gives me the delay information for the train I use to commute to work. I register this in the system as a PDF and that's it.
私の会社では、スマホやパソコンで「遅延証明書」と検索し、通勤につかっている電車の遅延情報を出します。これをPDFでシステムに登録して完了です。
What is "振替輸送（ふりかえゆそう）a replacement train"?
When a train is delayed for hours or is not expected to be restored, if you have already purchased a ticket or have a commuter pass, you can use another railroad company's route only for the section that is out of service. This is called "振替輸送（ふりかえゆそう）a replacement train."
電車が何時間も遅延したり、復旧の見込みがない時、切符を既に購入してしまったり、通勤の定期券を持っている場合、運行不能の区間のみ他の鉄道会社などの経路を利用する事ができます。これを「振替輸送」と言います。
Show the station staff your commuter pass or ticket and tell them your destination, and they will tell you the section for the transfer and which train you should take. Some railroad companies distribute tickets for a replacement train at this time, so please ask the station staff first.
駅員に定期券や切符を見せ、目的地を言うと振替輸送をする区間と、どの電車に乗れば良いのか教えてもらえます。この時に振替輸送用の切符を配布する鉄道会社もあるので、まずは駅員に聞いてみてくださいね。
On the line you are transferring to, show your purchased ticket, commuter pass, or transfer ticket to the sta
tion staff and go through the ticket gate. Just show it to them when you go through the ticket gate. 😉
振替先の路線では購入済の切符や定期券、もしくは振替輸送の切符を駅員に見せて改札を通ります。改札を通る時に、見せるだけですよ。
I once touched my IC card at a ticket gate by mistake. 😅
