日本では、年末になると「大掃除（おおそうじ）」という習慣があります。
It is an event where people spend more time than usual cleaning, making every corner of the house clean.
これは、普段の掃除よりも時間をかけて、家の中をすみずみまできれいにする行事です。
What Is Year-End Deep Cleaning?
Ōsōji is not just housework; it is considered an important cultural practice to tidy up the end of the year and welcome the new year with a fresh feeling.
大掃除は、単なる家事ではなく、一年の終わりを整え、新しい年を気持ちよく迎えるための大切な文化と考えられています。
Why Do People Do Deep Cleaning at the End of the Year?
In Japan, the New Year symbolizes a “new start.”
日本では、新年は「新しいスタート」の象徴です。
Because of this, it has long been believed that welcoming the new year while keeping the dirt and clutter of the old year is not a good idea.
そのため、古い年の汚れや不要なものを残したまま新年を迎えることは、あまり良いことではないと考えられてきました。
Year-end cleaning has meanings such as:
大掃除には、次のような意味があります。
- Removing a year’s worth of dirt
- 一年分の汚れを落とす
- Resetting your mind
- 気持ちをリセットする
- Preparing to welcome good fortune
- 良い運気を迎える準備をする
This way of thinking is said to be influenced by Shinto and Buddhism.
この考え方は、神道や仏教の影響を受けているとも言われています。
What Do People Clean During Ōsōji?
During Ōsōji, people clean places that are not usually cleaned very often.
大掃除では、普段あまり掃除しない場所まできれいにします。

- Kitchen exhaust fans
- キッチンの換気扇
- Bathrooms and toilets
- お風呂やトイレ

What Do People Clean During Ōsōji?
Ōsōji is often done by the whole family together.
大掃除は、家族みんなで行うことが多いです。
Parents and children clean together, or each person is assigned a specific area.
親と子どもが一緒に掃除をしたり、それぞれ担当場所を決めたりします。
Not only at home, but many companies and schools also do a big cleaning together before the long New Year holidays.
家だけでなく、会社や学校でも年末年始の長期休み前に、みんなで大掃除をすることが多いです。
At my company, we are off from December 27 to January 4 this year, so the last working day of the year is December 26.
私の会社では今年は12月27日〜1月4日まで休みなので、年末の最終日は12月26日です。
On that day, we cooperate to do a big cleaning from around noon, and afterward we have a “Bonenkai” (year-end party) to say, “Thank you for your hard work this year.”
その日はお昼ぐらいから協力して大掃除をし、その後「一年お疲れさまでした」という気持ちを込めて、忘年会をします。
