Japanese School Education
Let me introduce you to the typical Japanese education system. Compulsory education consists of six years of elementary school and three years of junior high school, totaling nine years.
日本の学校制度について、代表的な例を紹介します。義務教育は小学校と中学校の9年間となっています。
Kindergarten: Ages 3-5
Elementary School: Ages 6-12 (6 years)
Junior High School: Ages 12-15 (3 years)
High School: Ages 15-18 (3 years)
University, Vocational School
幼稚園: 3歳〜5歳
小学校: 6歳〜12歳（6年間）

In Japan, most people have experience wearing school uniforms during their student years.
日本では、ほとんどの人が学生時代に制服を着用した経験があります。
School Uniforms
The designs vary by school, each with its distinctive colors and styles. There are summer and winter uniforms that students change between seasonally. I attended schools that required uniforms in elementary, junior high, and high school. The high school uniform was very cute, and some students even chose the school because they admired its uniform.
デザインは学校ごとに異なり、それぞれ特徴的な色や形があります。夏服と冬服があり、季節によって着替えます。私は小学校、中学校、高校とそれぞれ制服が指定されている学校でした。高校の制服はとても可愛くて、その制服に憧れて入学を決めた人もいました🤭
Advantages of School Uniforms
Saves Time and Money
My daughter's elementary school didn't require uniforms, but when she started junior high school, she had to wear one. What made her happiest was "not having to think about what to wear in the morning." As a parent, I'm also grateful that having uniforms means we don't need to buy many clothes.
娘の小学校は私服でしたが、中学校から制服になりました。彼女が最も喜んでいたのは、「朝、何を着ようか考えなくて良い😉👍」ということでした。制服があることで服をたくさん買う必要がないのは、保護者としてもありがたいことです😁
Reduces Individual Differences
Clothing often reflects economic status and personal taste. Wearing uniforms eliminates these individual differences in clothing, allowing students to focus more on their studies and fostering a sense of unity in the class.
服装は経済状況やセンスが表れやすいものです。制服を着用することで服装による個人差がなくなるため、学業により集中でき、クラスの一体感も生まれやすくなります。
Crime Prevention Effect
When students engage in activities outside school in their uniforms, people can identify which school they're from. Students also become more conscious of appropriate behavior when wearing uniforms. Additionally, it makes it easier to identify outsiders on campus, contributing to crime prevention.
制服姿で校外活動をする際、周囲からはどこの学校の生徒かが分かります。生徒自身も、制服を着ることで適切な行動を意識するようになります。また、校内では部外者の識別が容易になり、防犯面でも効果があります。
Disadvantages of School Uniforms
Difficulty Adapting to Seasonal and Temperature Changes
I still remember how difficult it was wearing a thin skirt uniform on snowy days. While casual clothes can be adjusted according to temperature, uniforms must be worn for six months straight, making such adjustments challenging.
雪の日に薄い生地のスカートで登校した時の辛さは今でも記憶に残っています🥶
私服であれば気温に応じて調節できますが、制服は半年間同じ服装のため、それが難しい面があります。
Limited Self-Expression
The inability to express individuality might be one disadvantage. During my school days, some students would make small fashion statements by adjusting their skirt length or ribbon style, but excessive modifications would result in disciplinary action. School rules were strict, with regulations like "bangs must be cut above the eyebrows" that would be hard to understand today.
個性を表現しにくいことは、デメリットの一つかもしれません。
私の学生時代は、スカートの長さやリボンの結び方を少し変えて、ささやかなオシャレを楽しむ生徒がいましたが、度が過ぎると指導の対象となりました😅
校則も厳格で、「前髪は眉毛より上に切ること」など、現代では理解しがたい規則もありました😣
時代とともに、服装に対する考え方も変化してきていますので、最近の傾向についてもご説明します。
Recent Trends
Gender-Neutral Approach
Gender-free thinking is being reflected in uniforms. Many schools now allow female students to choose between skirts and pants. In my daughter's class, about a quarter of the students chose to wear pants.
ジェンダーフリーの考え方は、制服にも反映されつつあります。現在では多くの学校で、女子生徒がスカートだけでなく、ズボンも選択できるようになりました。娘のクラスでは4分の1の生徒がズボンを選択したそうです。
Students Updating Rules
At my daughter's school, the student council took the initiative to revise some dress code rules. Previously, there was a rule prohibiting the use of hair styling products. The student council conducted a survey of all students regarding their requests and what they considered appropriate student attire. They then held discussions with school officials. During this process, they examined the issues surrounding hair product use. As a result, the rule was changed to "only unscented hair products are permitted" to avoid interfering with studies.
娘の学校では、生徒会が主体となって服装のルールを一部改定したとのことです。以前は「整髪料の使用禁止」というルールがありました。
生徒会は全校生徒に対して要望と学生らしい服装についてアンケート調査を実施し、学校側と協議を重ねました。
その過程で、整髪料使用における問題点についても検討がなされました。その結果、学業に支障をきたさないよう「無香料の整髪料のみ使用可能」という規定に改められたそうです。
このように、ルールの根拠を考え、話し合いを通じて更新していく姿勢に感銘を受けました。
Material Evolution
I'm amazed at how easy it is to maintain my daughter's uniform. During my school days, we needed to use a presser to maintain the pleats in our skirts. Current materials are less likely to lose their shape and dry more quickly after washing. This is truly a welcome advancement.
娘の制服の手入れのしやすさには驚かされます。私の学生時代は、スカートのプリーツを保つため、プレッサーを使用する必要がありました。
現在の素材は型崩れしにくく、洗濯後も乾きやすいという特徴があります。これは本当にありがたい進歩です👍
